How long have you been teaching at Connect Charter School?
What is your favourite unit to teach?
The fundamental principles of democracy.
What is your educational/professional background?
I have my BEd from the University of Calgary and a Masters from Framingham State in Massachusetts. I have been teaching for over 20 years, with half of that experience gained in overseas positions with schools in New Zealand, South Korea and Japan.
What brought you to Connect?
My wife and I were teaching at an International School in Tokyo, Japan but wanted to start a family so we decided to head back to Calgary to put down some roots. Prior to leaving Japan, her mother forwarded a job listing she saw for Calgary Science School, so I had a telephone interview with Ron Sweet, Phil Butterfield and Darrell Lonsberry and they offered me a Humanities teaching position. The school now has a policy against conducting phone interviews (joke).
What do you consider the best part of teaching at our school?
The energetic staff and the supportive administration.
Tell us a bit about your family.
My wife and I both teach at Connect and consider the staff and students part of our extended family. We have one son, Sam who is our heart and soul.
What do you like to do when you’re not in the classroom?
I have an obsession with cars and keeping them clean. My garage is my sanctuary where I go to clear my head and find my inner chi.
What is your most recent rewarding moment as a teacher?
When I get the chance to visit with former students and hear how great they are doing.
What movie genre would you want to have a starring role in?
My middle name is “Bond” and that is no lie. So, I think that says it all.
