Good afternoon Connect parents;
I hope this finds you and your families healthy and doing as well as you can through the challenges we are currently experiencing. Thank you to the 250 or so parents who joined our Connected e-Learning information sessions this past week. If you wish to access recordings of the sessions you may do so at www.connectcharter.ca/elearning-parent-sessions/. As we mentioned during the webinars, you may submit questions for the leadership team to www.connectcharter.ca/contact-leadership/ and we will respond in a timely manner.
Note that Friday April 24th is a Professional Development Day and there will not be any online classes for students. Please see the calendar at www.connectcharter.ca/calendar/ for details of upcoming events and important dates.
Healthy 7 Series
The Healthy 7 series is designed to bring positive strategies to students and families on a variety of topics in 7 minutes or less! We understand that the changing circumstances during COVID-19 might be bringing up different types of challenges in your child’s life. These videos are designed to discuss positive and healthy coping strategies for our students (and families). Intro video: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1fr2DILzNEtksDzGL_3KnSUxArRNiMxh5
Some upcoming topics will include:
- Managing conflict
- Handling loneliness & boredom
- Importance of sleep and nutrition
- Study Strategies
With many of our teachers and students using Zoom for virtual classroom spaces, Connect Charter School is monitoring some of the concerns that have emerged in the media around the tool. Two security measures were implemented early in our Connected eLearning program which are:
- not sharing Zoom classrooms links publicly
- restricting access to our classroom Zoom sessions to users who are verified @ConnectCharter.ca or @ConnectStudent.ca users.
We are also not cloud recording classroom sessions. Zoom has been very transparent in upgrades and changes to increase security in the software, but we are also confident in our security measures and policies at this time. We are continuing to monitor on a daily basis and security remains a priority. If you have any further questions, please reach out to our Helpdesk at connectcharter.ca/elearning-helpdesk.
Registration and Fees for 2020-21
Re-registration of students entering grades 5 to 9 for the 2020-21 school year will open in Power School at 8am on Monday April 20th and close at 4pm on Friday May 1st. Registration for grade 4 will open at 8am on Thursday April 23rd and close at 4pm on Friday May 1st. Enrichment fees for the 2020-21 school year are $615 and transportation fees are $800. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the significant global economic downturn which is causing financial hardship to many families, we are offering flexible alternatives for fee payment:
- Pay the full amount by May 1st;
- Pay 50% May 1st, and 50% August 1st;
- On a case-by-case situation, an individualized payment plan can be discussed;
- Access our bursary fund for partial or whole payment upon completion and approval of the bursary application form with supporting documentation. Bursary applications may be obtained by emailing me in confidence at [email protected].
School bus transportation is a ‘user pay’ system in which fees must cover all costs associated with operating the buses assigned to the school. Due to the cancellation of classes effective March 16th, parents of returning students will be credited for the fees already paid for April, May and June 2020 on a prorated basis. Transportation fees for grade 9 students will be refunded. The fee payment options outlined for enrichment fees apply to transportation fees, with the exception that transportation fees must be paid in full by August 1, 2020.
Please direct any queries regarding registration or fee payments to Laurie Kangas at [email protected]
We truly appreciate the challenging times currently being experienced by many families and hope these measures to accommodate fee payments will be helpful.
As we find an increasing need to contact parents by email or phone, it is becoming apparent that some contact information, including street and mailing addresses is incomplete or incorrect. Ensure when you re-register that all your contact information is accurate and complete.
Impossible Shot Challenge
Mr. Ferguson’s Impossible Shot Challenge elicited some amazing responses from students and staff. You can view a video of all the submissions at:
